Read Anywhere

In our family you get to read (almost) anywhere. In the bathroom. Swinging in the hammock. At the dinner table. In the car. Even on the roof.

We started reading anywhere because life is busy and it’s hard to find time at the end of the day. By the time chores are done, tummies are fed, and teeth are brushed it’s about time for bed. And while we try leave enough time for a goodnight story, sleep is important too and sometimes it just doesn’t work out.

To prevent missing reading altogether, we decided to start incorporating our reading time into daily activities that keep us on the move.

Nick has been spending a great deal of time on the roof trying to fix some stubborn leaks, but had the great idea of inviting the boys out with him. While Nick works on the roof, the boys get their reading time in. Although they aren’t doing the same activity, they are still together and can enjoy each other’s company. The boys even update Nick on the latest twists and turns.

Another example is when soccer season started up. Both boys play, so on soccer nights we get home super late, we eat dinner late, we shower late—you get the idea. So story time in bed is out of the question. Instead, while each of the boys are bathing after practice, Nick and I read to them in the bathroom. Sometimes the boys even read to each other in these situations leaving Nick or I free to make dinner.

Life can be a bit chaotic, but it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on quality reading time. Where do you fit in your reading time? We would love to hear your tips!
